Literature Text

"Your highness, your seamstress has arrived." Billine announced, shoving the young maiden into the room.
Prince Cameron smiled and gave a polite bow. "Glad to see you have arrived, miss-"
"Livia." The maiden replied, curtsying with surprising eloquence. "My name is Livia."
"Speak to the prince more politely, silly little girl!" Billine, the old maid shrieked, "You will refer to him as your highness, or so help me, I'll-"
"Please, Billine, that's quite enough."
"Oh, of course, your highness!" Billine stopped fussing over the maiden and hastily curtsied "I'll just slip away here-if you need anything, anything at all-"
"I'll be sure to send for you, Billine. You are excused."
The old maid scurried away.
"Now then," Prince Cameron said, turning to Livia. "What say we get started on this outfit? I'm very busy today, and we've already lost enough time as it is." The young maiden didn't move, she only stared at him wide eyed, like a frightened doe.
"There's no need to be scared, my dear-are you all right?"
"Um…" her eyes darted back and forth, as though looking for some way to escape. Her knuckles were white as she gripped a small box like it was her lifeline. "Um…."
But Prince Cameron was a sympathetic fellow (or at least he liked to think of himself that way.)
"Girl, would you like to take a moment to compose yourself in the corner there behind the curtain?"
The maiden didn't even answer; she darted behind the curtain and shut it tight. The Prince could hear squeaks and mumbles and even an occasional pounding on the wall. At long last, the young maid emerged. Her outfit had changed; the lacy maid's uniform was now much better fitted to the woman's size, and much less frilly. He could see bits of torn fabric on the floor behind her. Amazing! Had the maiden actually tailored her own outfit in five short minutes?
"So, anyway, here is the design for my outfit on the night of the ball." The Prince said, gesturing to a drawing on a piece of parchment that was laid out on a nearby desk. Livia walked over and examined it. Her eyes widened, and she frowned, not speaking.
"I trust you can make it?"
"I can make it. But-"
"But what?"
"But it will look terrible on you."
"I do beg your pardon?" The Prince exclaimed, shocked. "The Queen's personal designer created it for me himself!"
"Well, you won't look good in it at all. If I were to design it-"
"Well, you're not going to design it; you're going to make it for me. Just who do you think you are?"
"Someone with an honest opinion!"
"Have you at all considered that maybe I wouldn't like to hear it?" The Prince fumed.
"So you're saying you like the design?" Livia snapped.
"I hate the bloody design! It makes me look like a pompous oaf! But If the queen saw me wearing anything other than this-" He pointed to the piece of parchment. "She wouldn't think twice about beheading the poor soul who managed to convince me to wear anything else!"
Livia gasped and dropped the parchment.
"Now, I've heard all about you, missy. They caught you pounding on the Castle gates, raving about being a princess like some madwoman. "
"You did?"
"When I heard the story, I actually felt sorry for you! Worse yet, I didn't even complain when the queen assigned you to sew me an outfit! Meanwhile, everyone else is afraid you're going to stick pins in me or something! Then, you're half an hour late to your first appointment, you've done nothing but stand around like some village idot, and now you have the gall to insult my outfit! I suggest you get out your measuring tape, and if you don't tell me what my wrist to shoulder length is I'll call the royal palace guard on you!"
"Well, fine! Go stand by the mirror and I'll sew you the frilliest shirt you ever saw! Meanwhile, nobody's bothered to look at things from my point of view, mostly because nobody even believes a word that's coming out of my mouth!"
"Nobody CARES!" The Prince hollered.
Just then, Billine burst through the doors. "Is everything all right, your highness? I heard loud noises, and--"
"Everything's fine!" Livia and the prince shouted in unison.
"Go stand by the mirror!" Livia yelled at the prince.
"Why you spoiled brat!" Billine screeched "You-"
"Well, maybe I will stand by the mirror!" The prince shouted back.
"Um, your highness-"
"Leave us, Billine!"
"Yes, your highness!"
The old maid shut the door and scurried away, thuds and shouting noises filling the hallway as she left. "Good heavens," she exclaimed, "The whole castle is a madhouse!"
A short part from my story, Royal to You, which is a retelling of ne of my favorite stories, the Princess and the Pea.

I hope you all enjoy!
